Toshiba has announced its intention to begin production of solid-state flash drives for laptops. No wonder: the Japanese manufacturer is the second largest supplier of NAND flash memory in the world, and they will have enough of this “good” to fill the market that is not really busy.
According to the company, the first solid-state drives under the Toshiba brand will appear (or, more precisely, will go into mass production) in May 2008. Volumes of 1.8 and 2.5-inch drives will vary from 32 to 128 GB.
At the moment, small, quiet, and providing faster download speeds (than HDDs), SSDs are mainly used in portable devices, such as tablet PCs or ultra mobile PCs. Because of the rather high prices in the PC and laptop market, they are not yet in demand. Perhaps Toshiba will be able to create a rather attractive offer (both in price and in terms of characteristics). Wait and see. Wait is not long.
