As it turned out recently, attackers can capture not only second-level domains, but also entire domain zones.
The unprecedented situation has developed around the national domains of Grenada (.gd), the British Virgin Islands (.vg), and the Turks and Caicos Islands (.tc).
The administrator of these domain zones is the British company AdamsNames, but in October last year, it delegated authority for technical support to the registry to KSRegistry, a branch of the German company Key-Systems.
')
But recently, KSRegistry announced that adamsnames.net registry domain management was intercepted by a “third party,” and the rights to this domain were transferred to Hexonet. The owner of the domain, according to whois, was Ertan Ulutas from Istanbul. KSRegistry claims that unknown attackers have launched a “shadow registry”.
But on the AdamsNames.net website,
another version of what happened is described: the AdamsNames.com registry domain was illegally seized by Key-Systems, which transferred the rights to manage the domain to another person without the permission of AdamsNames. For this reason, AdamsNames has transferred all of its other domains to another registrar, and KSRegistry is deprived of the functions of technical support for domain zones, and now nothing threatens them.
KSRegistry replied to this that it still performs the functions of technical support for registrars, but some “third party” is hindering this. The company's management stated that Key-Systems and KSRegistry did not abduct the AdamsNames domains, and all operations for the transfer of rights to manage them were carried out with its consent.
Now it is difficult to say who is right, who is guilty, and who generally now controls the domains .tc, .vg. and .gd. So far, the domain zones are working in their normal mode, but the question of what changes can make the one who gains control over the domain and the site AdamsNames, remains open.
Apparently, for some reason, there was a conflict between the management of AdamsNames and Key-Systems. Even if this dispute does not turn into something more serious, one can definitely say that the reputation of these three domain zones will suffer greatly, and many customers can transfer their sites to other top-level domains.
