Google will separate maps and commerce

Jeff Huber resigned from his position as head of Google’s map and commerce department, writes The Wall Street Journal. This happened as part of the restructuring, because of which Andy Rubin also handed the leadership of Android to Sundar Pichai.

According to the publication, Huber will be transferred to the subordination of Sergey Brin to the Google X department, which is working on projects such as an unmanned vehicle and Google Glass glasses. Maps will also become part of the Google search team, headed by Alan Eustace, and commerce will go to the advertising department, led by Susan Vodzhiski.

Google itself was limited to just such a statement: “Jeff is an exceptional manager. He finished his first decade at Google - having worked in some of our most difficult projects, such as advertising, applications, payments, and geo-products - and now he is ready to work in a more start-up environment. ”

Huber managed thousands of employees and very different services. Among them were such accomplished products as Google Maps, Google Earth and a site for online shopping search, and such newer services as Google Offers and Google Wallet.

Recently, Huber's department has been working on developing a service designed to help local companies offer customers home delivery of products from store shelves during the day or a few hours.

Changes in management will reduce the number of heads of core departments from seven to five. In addition to Pichai, Eustace and Vojiski, this is Vic Gundotra, who runs Google+ social network, and Salar Kamangar, who runs YouTube.
