Big Brother goes to the Olympics

The New York Times newspaper writes about a sophisticated video surveillance system, which IBM began to introduce in Beijing, the city where the 2008 Olympics will be held next summer. Smart Surveillance System ( Smart Surveillance System or S3) is a flexible software package and equipment, which, relying even on the “ancient” networks of analog surveillance cameras, can automatically recognize various events occurring on the streets and alert the corresponding services about them.

In particular, the system can identify a suspiciously behaving person and establish short-term surveillance of him to analyze his actions. If the program decides that a person could be a threat to society, they will be taken up by already living police officers.

Similar systems will soon be installed in the business areas of New York and Chicago. Today, workers, albeit simpler, versions of the system are employed by a number of private customers: in banks and shopping centers.
