In general, Habré has enough posts about freelancing in general, and about Elance.com in particular - the post below is an attempt to share experience.
Information does not happen much - therefore let me begin.
If you hear about Elance for the first time, I highly recommend reading the two posts below,
serjio gives very good advice about registration, filling your portfolio, bids and other things you need to know:
So you are registered. Do not rush to immediately run to put bids - 99% that you will not pay attention.
Spend time and set up a profile:
- add a photo
- verify your phone
- fill out the profile
- order a Payoneer card (if not yet)
- read the article Creating a Great Elance Profile and fill up the profile.
')
Then you need to pass the tests. Tests presented a fair amount, choose to your taste. The bigger, the better.
When passing the tests, try to get at least 20% of the best - for this they give a die, and potential customers see that you understand this topic.
In general, at the first stage, your profile plays a very important role - especially tests, and the Overview and Service Description fields. I also filled out the Employment field.
Here, for example, what potential clients see in the Skills field with me:

Not bad? And I think so.
For everything described above, it took me 2 full days.
Now you can start looking for customers and make bids. Go to the menu at the top Find Work> Search Jobs, and on the left in the menu configure the filter:

For a free account, Elance gives 15 "coins" - that is, you can put a bid for 15 projects. This is not enough, but in order to find the first client - enough. Look for work that you can do 100% and make a bid.
A couple of tips:
- read the project description fully and carefully;
- Write the text of the bid so that it is clear that you understand the problem and know how to solve it. A simple sentence like "I have enough experience to do this" does not work;
- tell the client exactly what you are going to do to complete the project
- if the project involves any refusal to discuss it - it is worth mentioning, with an approximate estimate of time;
- ask the client additional questions if something in the project description is not clear to you;
- subscribe.
An example of a good bid:
Hi robert
I have all the experience you need to achieve.
It is a person who is looking for.
I think it can be completed in less than 15 hours.
Please let me know if you are interested in this project!
Thanks.

At first, bids should be left only for "fresh" projects that have recently been opened - it is ideal to find a client who needs a freelancer urgently and to offer their services first - the chances of getting a project to increase.
First focus on small projects - site transfer, setting up backups, repairing mail. The more projects you complete, the faster your profile will be filled, and the higher you will be in search results - in the future this will allow you not to search for projects yourself, the clients will invite you to make a bid. This saves a lot of time - it took me about 6 hours at the beginning just to look for / wait for a suitable project.
After receiving the project - do it, get money and feedback from the client, leave your review, buy a professional account and continue working.
Within two months it is quite possible to achieve these results here:

Hope the tips above will help you. If you have any questions - you are welcome in the comments, or lichku.
