DRM self-destructing chair

Technical means of protecting intellectual property, or DRM , cause great irritation to many - because, in fact, this is a deliberate deterioration of technology, artificial restrictions, which digital content is initially devoid of. With the help of DRM, you can prohibit not only copying, but also playing movies or music in a certain area, or limit the time for using a digital copy, and even impose a restriction on how many times it can be played.

The team of the University of Design and Arts of Lausanne (Switzerland), which took part in the creative marathon for the geeks of Deconstruction , chose the theme of the project “musical chair”. Under the terms of the marathon, the participating teams must create a creative project in 48 hours, the essence of which is to “take objects from the real world, disassemble them into parts and rebuild again, combining and changing components”.

During the brainstorming, the idea was transformed into a “chair with DRM” - a chair with a restriction on how many times it can be used. The sensor in the chair is triggered when someone sits on it. After nine (by the number of team members) times, the wire passed through the plastic joints of the parts of the chair melts them, and the chair falls apart.

At first it was planned to supply the chair with miniature powder charges that would shoot the legs - the provocative effect of illustrating the principle of " defective by design " would have been much stronger, but nobody decided to sit on such a chair, so a milder option was chosen. The whole process of creating a chair with DRM is captured on the team page .
