Sam Ramji, director of the open source software lab at
Microsoft , published an open invitation to collaborate with the software giant on the mailing list of the
Mozilla development discussion group,
ZDNet reported.
“I want to see if you are ready to provide 1: 1 support for Firefox and Thunderbird on Vista,” writes Ramji. He stressed that Microsoft "is seeking to extend its thinking beyond commercial companies and embrace open source projects."
The first reaction of the open source community indicates a suspicious attitude towards Microsoft motives. However, there are those who believe that the proposal - a sign of change in the company. Apparently, Microsoft finally realized that "ultimately ... proprietary technologies are always supplanted by the generally accepted alternative based on open standards, which implies RSS, Open Source Lab, XML and free, free access to Open XML," writes one enthusiast in the posting on the
Ars Technica website.
