Is IPTV over Wi-Fi a problem? Absolutely no problem!

I think many have encountered such a problem. The provider provides IPTV service, not WebTV via HTTP, but classic IPTV via UDP multicast. There is a TV with Ethernet-port or media player, with the support of this service. On the router, we enable the Multicast Stream (or IPTV multicast) feature. We connect our TV or media player with a twisted pair to it, load the playlist file in M3U or XML format and enjoy watching TV programs in HD quality.

But I, as probably many readers, have a desire to get rid of unnecessary wires. Moreover, there are many smartphones, tablets and other gadgets that do not have the physical ability to connect wires. And simply, Wi-Fi is more convenient, as they say “farther, more, better”.

Decided to use the following scheme:

... and I saw this HDTV ...

the squares are not Malevich, but it's still not possible to watch, but, according to a large number of descriptions from different forums, some have only that Malevich ...

Began to study the question. It turned out that IPTV multicast, not all Wi-Fi access points can transmit correctly. And this, for the most part, is not the firmware bug of routers and access points, but the features of the protocol and its implementation in radio chips.
And so, what to do? The desire to lie on the couch and watch IPTV on the tablet has not diminished.
Found a fairly simple solution - the service UDP-to-HTTP. A rather simple program that converts UDP multicast packets into HTTP unicast on the fly. And this very HTTP unicast is perfectly transmitted over Wi-Fi.
And here I was once again convinced that I had not for nothing spent the "hard earned" money on the network drive D-Link DNS-325 . He has the ability to install additional software, the so-called Add-Ons. At the same time, the installation of Add-Ons does not interfere with the operation of the basic functionality at all. That is, after installing Add-Ons, it continues to work on it, without deterioration in functionality and performance, such services as Samba, FTP, NFS, DLNA, etc.
And so what we do. From the site http: // dlink / dns we take Add-On "UDP-to-HTTP".

Install the Add-On on the DNS-325 through the “Management / Application Management / Add-Ons” section.

image

The messages “This add-on was not created by D-Link Corporation” are not frightened, we click “Yes”.

image

Start Add-On with the Start button and go to the Applications section.

image

Click on the "UDP-to-HTTP" icon. We see instructions for converting the URL of the UDP multicast channels to HTTP unicast. According to it, we edit our M3U or XML playlist.

For example, if the DNS-325 ip-address is 172.17.17.11:

We load the modified playlist into a TV, media player, IPTV viewer on a tablet or smartphone and enjoy watching HD programs (well, of course, if the bandwidth of your Wi-Fi allows).

The work scheme is obtained as follows:

Bottom line: IPTV without “squares”, via Wi-Fi, you can watch on any TV or gadget using any router with built-in Wi-Fi. The main thing is to choose the right device and the right software.
In the near future I will try to write small articles on other, equally interesting Add-Ons, in my opinion, a very successful device called D-Link DNS-325 .
