The Bank has accrued 211 trillion US dollars

The absolute record for the size of the banking error was set by Wachovia Bank employees in Georgia, USA. They manually entered information into the computer and mixed up the amount field with the account number field.

Joe Martins closed a bank account and received a notification in the mail indicating the final balance. The document was this figure:

And a separate note in words: "zero cents."

That is 211 trillion dollars: 70 times more than the US state budget, hundreds of times more than the wealth of the world's richest people.

Joe Martins says that at first he didn’t know what to think. He began to reflect on how such a debt would affect his credit history and relations with the tax inspectorate.

Bank executives did not say how long Martins had a negative balance on his account. However, they assured that this is an isolated case, other clients with accounts have full order.
