ASUS MeMO Pad ME172V Tablet Review

Today, the market for 7-inch tablets is a bitter struggle. Large manufacturers, releasing their tablets, set the tone for the market. Chinese factories are not far behind, making many tablets on various platforms, costing from 3 thousand rubles. True, the quality of them is sometimes not so good. Of course, one of the best tablets in this category in 2012 was the Google Nexus 7, produced by ASUS. The hero of this review has similar features and makes good use of successful Nexus 7 solutions.

image Package and package

The tablet comes in a small matte box - its size is comparable to approximately the area of the tablet itself.

image

Inside is the device itself, underneath the power supply and micro USB cable.

image

The charger is small, like modern smartphones. The current is 2 times more: instead of the usual 1 amp, 5 volts and 2 amps are here.

image

image Appearance

The case of the MeMO Pad is almost the same as that of the Nexus 7. The right proportions and good materials are well proven. The tablet has a rectangular shape with rounded corners.

image

The back cover is made of textured matte plastic, thanks to which the tablet does not slip in your hand, and there are no fingerprints on the cover.

The body of the tablet has a minimum of elements. On the bottom is a micro USB connector for connecting to a computer and charging. A little to the left is a microSD memory card slot with support for SDHC cards, the maximum memory card size is 32 GB.

image

image

On the left side there is an unlock button and a rocker to adjust the volume. The buttons are soft and pressed with a soft click.

image

From above we see the universal headset jack and microphone.

image

On the right side there is a small hole designed for hot rebooting the tablet.

image

The speaker is located on the back cover and closed with a metal grid.

image

image Screen and Camera

The ASUS MeMO Pad uses a 7-inch LED-screen with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels. Density - 168 points per 1 inch. This, of course, is not an HD screen, as in the Nexus 7, but the pixels are not so noticeable.

image

The sensitivity of the sensor is excellent - the tablet reacts even to weak touches. There is support for multi-touch. In total, the sensor fulfills up to ten simultaneous touches.

image

Through the use of technology TN + WV (Wide View) was able to achieve wider viewing angles than in a conventional TN-matrix. At certain viewing angles, the color and contrast are lost at the screen, but this happens only in landscape viewing - the two of you don’t watch movies. In the portrait orientation with the review, everything is in order: the colors are displayed correctly.

image

Above the screen is an HD camera eye (1 megapixel resolution, f / 2.0 aperture). The camera produces a picture in the resolution of 720p, shooting video - up to 30 frames per second.

image

image Sound

The sound component of the tablet has the support of SonicMaster, well-proven in some models of laptops from ASUS.

image

Developed by the ASUS Golden Ear team in collaboration with Bang & Olufsen ICEpower experts, this technology involves the use of hardware and software to improve the sound quality, which is close to providing complete individual audio systems.

image

Unlike other audio solutions designed only to improve the sound, artificially amplifying certain frequencies, SonicMaster concentrates on delivering the originally recorded sound as accurately as possible without deceiving your ears with “primitive” audio filters. Therefore, you can be sure that you hear the recording exactly as it was recorded.

image Performance

The heart of the tablet is the VIA WM8950 processor. This is a single-core 1 GHz CPU, built on the basis of ARM Cortex-A9.

image

image

The graphics here are ARM Mali-400. The tablet's power is enough for hardware decoding of FullHD-video 1080p, H.264. Of course, we will not play high-performance 3D games, but simple games like Angry Birds will work fine. Given the cost of the tablet, it is more and is not required. There is 1 GB of RAM here, there will be plenty of this for daily work. The amount of internal memory is 8 or 16 GB.

On benchmarks of performance it is clear that the MeMO pad works at the level of the former single core flagships.

image Software platform

The device works on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. Thanks to this version, it was possible to achieve smoother operation of the interface even on a single-core processor. On top of it is the ASUS Launcher shell, which adds functionality to the interface.

image

image

image

image

File manager - the name speaks for itself. It contains all the basic functions: rename, copy, cut, drag and drop, create folders, search.

image

image Battery and working time

The tablet is equipped with a non-removable lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 4270 mAh.

Video mode: medium brightness, Wi-Fi off, tablet worked for 7 hours.

Reader mode: minimum brightness, Wi-Fi is disabled, the tablet lasted 8.5 hours.

With constant use of the Internet, watching videos and reading the charge is enough for 6.5 hours.

It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the battery, provided you use the original charge.

image

image Conclusion

ASUS has got a good budget tablet. Its main positioning is work on the Internet, social networks, reading books, news and watching videos. If you need productive applications and games, it is better to pay attention to the Nexus 7. The new tablet from ASUS is designed for people who would like to purchase an inexpensive but high-quality device from a well-known brand. The expected price of the tablet is 7 thousand rubles.
