Microsoft acquired WebFives media hosting

Remember, not so long ago on the Web appeared assumptions that Microsoft decided to create your own Flickr? So: it turned out to be wrong, or rather not quite right. The fact is that the Redmond company decided not to create their own photo hosting site, but to buy it ready. This time, in the hands of Mons, Microsoft bought WebFives , along with technology and trademark rights. This startup offers hosting services not only for photos, but also for mobile and network video, as well as audio recordings and blogs.

Interestingly, WebFives (formerly called Vizrea) was founded by former Microsoft Software Engineer Michael Toutonghi, who created the Media Center for Windows.

Tutongi said that Microsoft agreed to buy the project as early as November, but allowed the site to work through to the end of this year so that users could download all their content to computers. The fact is that previously accumulated user information will be deleted from WebFives servers.

Michael hinted that WebFives products and services, which include a mobile site, widgets and a media player for social networks (like Facebook and MySpace), will be included in the Windows Live and / or MSN services.

Whether Microsoft will make WebFives a “Flickr killer”, or even be able to compete with it, time will tell ...
