From kind people I got into the hands of such an old enough scanner, Mustek 6000p, a device from the time of Windows 95 and large white plastic cases. As a rarity of great value, he does not represent, but it is a pity to throw it away without looking inside).

The scanner car's illuminator is a common cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL), the same used in the backlight of the LCD matrix.
Board with a carriage. In the left side we see a high-voltage inverter, it's time to try to light a lamp.
In the left corner is the integral stabilizer 7812, designated as Q8, it is easy to understand from it which tracks the inverter receives power from. At its entrance when turning on the scanner about 14 volts, but the lamp does not light, how to start it? Not so many tracks from the connector, which the carriage board connects to the main board, lead to the board section with an inverter, so suppose that the key that triggers the lamp is assembled on the Q5 transistor.
We close the tweezers with the resistor R3, connected to the base of the transistor, to + power supply, and ... let there be light!
Having understood what's what, we cut off all the excess, solder a jumper resistor between R3 and power ...
... and pins for the printer's native power connector.
We'll get just such a neat inverter board, check again.
Of course, this is not enough to illuminate the workplace, but you can make the backlight in some drawer according to the principle of a lamp in a refrigerator. As a donor of the case, a no less aged mouse, the same age as the scanner, came up well. The switch will be a reed switch with normally closed contacts.
Assembled. It is a pity that the buttons do not carry any functional load =)
Fasten the lamp and housing on double-sided tape. On the door - a magnet from the hard disk on the same tape. Not really aesthetically pleasing, but it does the job.
To illuminate a small space is more than enough
The attentive reader will notice that there is already a jumper instead of a stabilizer on the photo of the board in the mouse body - it is no longer necessary, the inverter is powered by the home server, which is located in the same cabinet.
