Who writes WebKit?

Opera's transition to WebKit finally consolidated the position of this engine as a de facto standard on mobile devices and significantly strengthened its position on desktops and laptops. It seems that WebKit is gradually becoming for browsers something of a Linux kernel for operating systems or jQuery for websites . Naturally, this causes certain concerns - we all remember the era of absolute dominance of IE. Fortunately, WebKit is an open project, and it is much less likely to be like the cursed by many generations of IE6 web designers.

Recently, the company Bitergia very helpful in analyzing commits in the WebKit repository for all its existence. The main developers are expected to be Apple and Google. However, WebKit is not at all a project of two corporations. Today, about 20 companies participate in the development, and the share of “minority shareholders” is already about 25% and is constantly growing. And in 2007, the development of the engine was engaged almost exclusively Apple.

By commit activity, it is interesting to track changes in the strategies of participating companies. So, Nokia, which still occupies the third place in the general statistics, has practically left the project. The peak of its activity came in 2010. But RIM, on the contrary, took WebKit seriously. Adobe is also gaining momentum very quickly - the company relies on HTML5 and actively helps to build a platform that can replace Flash. A powerful spurt in the direction of WebKit made over the past year by Intel and Samsung.

A few words about the calculation methodology. In total, 125 863 commits were found in the WebKit repository. From the analysis, commits related to the daily care of the project and the correction of minor errors were excluded. Thus, it was analyzed participation in the development of the project (about two-thirds of all commits).

The affiliation of each developer to a particular company was determined on the basis of a combined methodology, including both automatic methods (domain affiliation in the developer's mailing address) and manual search on the Internet by name. For 561 developers, who made a total of 2,983 commits, they could not unambiguously determine their affiliation, and they were excluded from the study. Total managed to find about 1600 unique authors (including a number of bots).
