The number of orders for OLPC exceeded half a million
The head of the OLPC project, Nicholas Negroponte, in a Friday interview confirmed information about new orders for laptops for children: the Peruvian government bought a batch of 260,000 units, and Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim bought 50,000 pieces for charity events in his country . Thus, the total number of orders reached 610,000 devices.
Negroponte hopes for new large orders in the wake of the current growth of interest in the platform, which, however, is much weaker than what the project authors had expected at the beginning. Competition from the Taiwanese manufacturers who have released their notebook models from the ultra-low price category is making itself felt more and more every day: Asus EeePC has long since shifted the OLPC from the pedestal of the most desirable laptop as a gift.
