Tablet as a second screen under linux

I decided to try to use the tablet as an additional screen for my laptop with Linux for expanding the workspace, touch input and remote control.
Found 2 ways to do this. What and share.


All further actions are performed on the laptop. To connect to the tablet, you need to install any VNC client.

First, fastest

You will need vnc4server and x2x:

sudo apt-get install vnc4server x2x 

When you first start vnc4server will ask for a password to connect. After that, it will launch the X session and wait for the vnc connection on port 5901. The session configuration is specified in the file ~ / .vnc / xstartup.

To control the session from a computer, you can use x2x:

 x2x -to :1 -east 

Now, when you move the mouse cursor over the right edge of the screen, it will appear on the tablet and keyboard input will switch there too.

This method has a drawback: you cannot drag a window from one screen to another.

Second way

Use the dummy driver as the second video card, combine them with the main one with xinerama and give part of the desktop through x11vnc.

 sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-dummy x11vnc

Everything else is configured by Xorg automatically.

Reboot the xorg server, go to the session and run:

 x11vnc -clip 1024x768+1280+0 

The default port is 5900.
In this case, I have a 1280 laptop screen size horizontally, this number is an offset, and 1024x768 is the size of the tablet screen.

This solution allows you to work with two screens in one session and move the window between devices.

To connect, I use the vnc client androidVNC. On a Ubuntu 12.04 laptop.
