Back in September last year, the
news was published on Habré that the European Union demanded that Facebook turn off facial recognition in Europe. This technology, according to the authorities of the European Union, violates several laws on the protection of user data. Then Facebook agreed with the requirements of the European Union, and turned off the technology for Europe (though only for new users). Now, Facebook had to remove photo tags from personal photos of long-registered users.
Now Facebook has to listen to the requirements of the European Union, since the international office of this social network is open in Ireland, so all European laws apply to the social network. Facebook had to spend about six months to create a technology to remove phototags from users, and to introduce this technology.

It is worth noting that many human rights organizations consider the work of Facebook unsatisfactory in terms of protecting the information of social network users. Success in negotiations with Facebook regarding the removal of phototags from recognized photos is largely a consequence of the work of lawyers and officials of the European Union.
As for other countries, in particular, the United States, for other regions, facial recognition technology, including the recognition of friends in photographs (Tag Suggest feature), remains relevant. Maybe, soon, recognition will be turned off there, and photo tags will be deleted, but for now everything is calm.
