Microsoft is going to release Office for Linux in 2014
This rumor is connected with the source that Michael Larabel talked about at FOSDEM (one of the largest open source conferences in Europe). According to this source, which is supposedly one of the developers of open source software at Microsoft, Microsoft is “pointedly looking at” the release of the Linux port for Office in 2014. The sudden interest seems to be related to the fact that Linux shows “commercial viability”, and because Microsoft is already working on Office for Android. Android is a Linux-like operating system, that is, much of the work has already been done, it remains to take the next step and move Office to Linux.
Until now, Microsoft has never released software for Linux (with the exception of Skype, but it was an acquisition).
