More recently, the Obama administration refused to build the Death Star. Well, sad. But not deadly. Answer? Fashionable crowdfunding!
At Kickstarter, the Death Star public finance project is open, at least from its very beginning. The authors of the project are collecting 20 million pounds for the elaboration of the already existing initial plan of the combat station (it is shown in the picture below).

In the design under development, they are going to take into account all the accumulated experience (in particular, to protect the reactor ports from unwanted elements), and also to make the project open both in the hardware and software parts.
The distant goal is to collect already $ 850,000,000,000,000,000 for the construction of the Star itself.
