Lecture content


The lecture by Fabrizio will be devoted to a new paradigm in modern science, based on the need to process real-time large amounts of data from various sources - Data Intensive Science. The topic of using cloud technologies for processing large amounts of data in research and the problem of the “information explosion” will be touched upon. Also during his presentation, Fabrizio will talk about his experience in the VENUS-C project, which was to develop and deploy a cloud infrastructure to support scientific and industrial applications.

Fabrizio Gagliardi - director of the European research department of Microsoft Research.
Fabrizio joined Microsoft in November 2005, taking responsibility for the company's technical initiative in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Within this position, Fabrizio Gagliardi was responsible for the development and management of Microsoft Research's external research strategy in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, focusing on the long-term cooperation with leading research institutes and universities in Central and Eastern Europe (including Russia), Southern Europe, Israel, the Middle East and South Africa.

Fabrizio Gagliardi is also responsible for the Microsoft Research strategy in the framework programs of the European Union and pilot projects on the use of cloud computing in science. As part of this work in 2010, he negotiated with the EU for the large EU FP7 project to develop and deploy cloud infrastructure to support scientific and industrial applications: VENUS-C (www.venus-c.eu). The project continues until July 2013 and received funding from the EU of more than 4.5 million €.

Since the late 90s, he was one of the first to develop and implement grid computing in Europe, which led to the creation of projects such as the EU-DataGrid and EGEE, in which he was the principal researcher and director from 2000 to 2005.

Fabrizio Gagliardi is the author and co-author of many high-performance computing publications applicable in science. He is an expert in computing in the European Commission and a member of several scientific advisory committees, conferences and a member of the editorial board of several scientific journals.
