IBM gel kills bacteria, even antibiotic-resistant

The effect of the hydrogel on the bacterial biofilm of Staphylococcus aureus resistant to antibiotics

IBM has been developing materials for the production of computer chips for decades. Several years ago, while working on one of the chips, engineers discovered that when certain materials were combined, a positive electrical charge was formed, with which it was possible to etch the silicon substrate extremely precisely, in fact, on an atomic scale.

Of course, this discovery is useful for the production of chips. But scientists wondered where else could it be used? For example, how does a positive charge affect living cells? It turned out that the effect is deadly : the substance attracts the negatively charged cell membrane to itself, instantly destroying the cell.

IBM employees together with specialists from the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology) began experiments on the effects of the polymer on colonies of Staphylococcus aureus that are resistant to the effects of modern antibiotics. Such bacteria spread through gyms and other public places, affecting those who do not follow the rules of hygiene. Patients develop a skin infection, and then sepsis, pneumonia, or other complications can develop.

As a result of the tests, the scientists managed to create a nano-substance with such unique properties that it was called the ninja polymer . This substance quickly covers the cells of staphylococcus, destroys them, and then disappears without a trace as a result of biodegradation. Trace disappearance is very important that the polymer could not damage the useful cells and did not accumulate in the organs.

The mechanism of action of nanogel IBM is different from the mechanism of action of antibiotics. The gel mechanically affects the membrane of staphylococcus and disables it, which leads to cell death.

The inventors have just begun to explore in which other areas a unique invention can be applied. For example, it can be used instead of soap and toothpaste, for permanent disinfection of premises. In addition to personal hygiene, hydrogel can be useful in agriculture, food industry, etc. Means for effective disinfection are needed everywhere.
