Released SDK for Windows Phone 7.8

Microsoft announced the release of the SDK for Windows Phone 7.8, giving developers the opportunity to refine their applications to work correctly with the new version of the operating system. Windows Phone 7.8 does not support applications for Windows Phone 8, but developers who have written applications for WP 7.5 can now adapt them to the capabilities of a custom Windows Phone 7.8 desktop.

In addition, the SDK allows you to test applications to work on both budget devices with 256 MB of RAM, and on devices of the older segment with 512 MB or more built-in RAM.
Upgrading to Windows Phone 7.8 for Nokia Lumia smartphones based on Windows Phone 7.5 is already preparing for release. In addition, in the near future a number of devices based on WP 7.8 will be on sale, such as the Nokia Lumia 510 and Nokia Lumia 505.
Developers can get the new Windows Phone 7.8 SDK on the Microsoft website now.

More about innovations:
This release of Windows Phone SDK Update for Windows Phone 7.8 adds two new Windows Phone 7.8 emulator images to an existing SDK installation. They allow you to test how your application will behave when running on Windows Phone 7.8.

The SDK update adds the following features:

• Windows Phone 7.8 emulator: the image of this OS emulates how the application runs on a 512-MB device running Windows Phone 7.8 (build 8858);
• Windows Phone 7.8 256 MB emulator: the image of this OS emulates how Windows Phone 7.8 (build 8858) runs on a device with 256 MB;
• If you are running Windows Phone SDK 7.1, the update will also download and install the Windows Phone SDK 7.1.1 Update on your computer.

In Windows Phone 7.8, the behavior of applications on the start screen is changed, similarly to that on Windows Phone 8:
•
Primary tiles can be of three types - small, wide and reversible (Flip tile);
• For secondary tiles, you can use three new patterns - “reversible”, “icon” and “cycle” (Flip, Iconic and Cycle).

Important: The update does not change your existing Windows Phone OS 7.1 emulator images - you can continue to develop and debug applications on your phone using the standard Windows Phone 7.5 image.
