Intel ceases production of desktop motherboards

Within three years, Intel will curtail the production of motherboards for desktop computers. The latest processors, for which the “native” motherboards will be made, will be the chips on the Haswell micro-architecture, the release of which is expected in June of this year. Intel will continue to produce server boards, and the consumer market will focus on mobile devices and new form factors, such as Next unit of computing (Intel NUC) - a full-fledged computer with a Core i3 or i5 processor measuring 10 by 10 centimeters - only slightly larger and thicker than the Raspberry Pi.

The first motherboard under the Intel brand was released in 1993. It was called Batman, was based on the 430LX chipset, and supported the Socket 4 socket with a processor frequency of up to 60 MHz.

Today, tablets, smartphones, ultrabooks and laptops are confidently replacing desktop computers. The share of desktops is rapidly falling , and even absolute sales figures remain unchanged at best, while mobile computers show double-digit growth.
