Licenses for 3G operators will be issued this year.
Licenses for the provision of 3G services, third generation mobile communications, will begin to be issued in 2006, RIA Novosti reports the words of the Minister of Information Technologies and Communications Leonid Reiman.
“Issues related to the issuance of a license for 3G are on the agenda. This year, licenses for the third generation will be put up for competition, ”the minister said at a press conference on Monday, adding that these will be national licenses covering the entire territory of Russia.
However, the criteria for issuing such licenses to operators have not yet been approved. There are proposals for competitions from the Association of 3G. “We will focus on these proposals,” said the Minister.
In his opinion, one of the criteria should be the level of development of the operator’s network. “But I don’t think that we will put it as the key one, since not a single operator has 100% coverage,” said Reiman.
At the beginning of the summer, he announced that the first licenses for the provision of 3G services would be issued before the end of the current year. “At the end of the summer, we plan to announce a competition and finish everything by the end of the year,” the minister said.
