Opera Ice: New browser for mobile platforms on WebKit
Opera Software, the company that created the popular eponymous browser in February, will launch a new browser for smartphones and tablets - Opera Ice. This is done in an effort to remain equal in the fight against Google and Apple in the mobile Internet market.
The Pocket-lint portal was shown the company's “internal” video meeting, which took place before Christmas, where Lars Boylessen, the CEO of Opera, described the strategy for 2013. There was also shown a demo of a new browser, which will be built on the WebKit platform, not Presto.
The new Opera Ice browser will be focused on showing the user as little of the interface as possible, focusing the user's attention only on the content. For example, in it they will refuse the buttons of transitions forward and back through the pages in favor of gestures with the same functionality. ')
“This browser is completely focused on tablets and touch input,” the project manager says, “Others usually take a PC browser and press it into the tablet, or inflate a mobile browser to fill the space.”

The meeting showed a beta version of the browser. You can see that the tabs will be replaced by icons on the home page, and new pages will be opened by searching or entering the URL. If the user wants to bookmark the page, he will be able to tap on the part of the screen and “fix” it with an icon on the start screen. "Poor-quality" sites will be marked with a warning sign to restrict access to them.
" We need to move to a new level, raise our presence in certain segments of the market in order to be confident of further growth, " said Boylsen to his colleagues at the meeting.
" Realizing that smartphones are becoming critical for the company's future, Opera will focus on releasing a new browser for iOS and Android as early as February. "
" We have to provide quality products for iOS and Android. These are the two leading platforms for which people buy smartphones. "
Boylsen does not deny the release of the browser for Windows Phone, but clarifies that this is not a priority until sales of smartphones with Microsoft OSs go up.
The reason for this step is that although Opera Mini is good, it has disadvantages compared to other browsers on the market.
" Opera Mini is great, but it is not a full browser like Chrome or Safari. Too many sites cannot work correctly on it. "
However, he mentioned that the company is not going to give up the Opera Mini: “The Mini is very important to us. There must be some kind of platform where we will find new users and then attract them to use our products for smartphones. ”
Equally important, Boylene announced plans to release Opera Ice for desktops in March.
