Corning introduced an optical USB cable

The company Corning has announced not only Gorilla Glass 3, there is another extremely interesting development. This is a USB data cable. Everything, as usual, only instead of copper cable is used ... fiber. The most interesting thing is not even the fact that Corning has created a fiber-optic USB cable with a laser system, but the fact that such a cable will cost no more than the usual USB copper data cable.

Such a system has a number of advantages over a standard cable. The fact is that the use of fiber allows you to increase the length of the USB cable up to 100 meters (some sources say up to 100 feet, which is about 30 meters, but video from the site shows 100 meters), which is simply impossible in the case of a standard system . So now various extenders are simply not needed.

The system itself works as follows: at the input, the signal is converted from electric to light. At the output, of course, the light signal undergoes a reverse transformation, and turns into an electrical one.

The company has made its fiber very flexible, so you don’t need to fear for fiber-optic USB cables, you can bend them any way.

Everything looks very attractive, but there is one drawback, and a very significant one. The fact is that such a USB cable can transfer data, yes. But now it’s not possible to charge the connected devices. If you can transfer data with a standard USB cable and simultaneously charge a connected device, the fiber can only transfer data.

Corning promises to launch a new product in the sale in the first quarter of this year.
