The story, which began exactly eight months ago with the accusation of several large Japanese companies in organizing a cartel plot, got its logical continuation. We are talking about corporations Sony, Maxell and Fuji, which in March of this year, the anti-monopolists of the European Union accused of colluding and illegal price-fixing on professional videotapes Betacam SP and Digital Betacam. These formats were especially popular between 1999 and 2002. It was at this time that, as stated in the reports of the EU antitrust authorities, all three companies jointly raised the price of professional video tapes three times, and later artificially kept them at a high level, while controlling about 85% of the relevant market.
For all these terrible acts, the EU ordered Sony, Fuji and Maxell to pay a fine of 75 million euros (about 110 million US dollars).
