Remote work enhances the spirit, reduces stress

If an employee works not in the office, but at home, then his job satisfaction and loyalty level to the employer are increased. No need to stand in traffic jams, rush to public transport, pushing on the bus - all this saves a lot of nerves. These conclusions were made by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, who collected and analyzed data on 13 thousand remote workers of various American firms.

Work at home is becoming more popular in the United States. Last year, 45 million Americans turned to this type of labor, which is 4 million more than in 2003. At the same time, over the past couple of years there has been a sharp jump (by about 60%) in the number of people who work from home regularly, that is, at least once a month. According to experts, their number will continue to grow with the spread of broadband Internet access.

Until now, some employers and workers are afraid of remote work. The former believe that it makes it difficult for their colleagues to communicate, and the latter fear that their careers suffer from this. However, the researchers did not find any signs of either one or the other. On the contrary, they talk about additional benefits both for a particular company and for the whole society: reduction of office expenses and unloading of the urban transport system, reduction of the level of exhaust gases, etc.

Specialists from Pennsylvania are silent about one side aspect of remote work: it corrupts too much, so it can be hard to refuse it later. For example, yesterday it became known that the new leadership of AT & T, the largest American telecom, turned out to be resolutely opposed to the "remotes" and, in a strict form, ordered that they all be urgently brought back into cubicles . About 10-12 thousand people will return to workplaces. There was no limit to the indignation of the staff, and now there is a real scandal around it.
