Google closed Maps for Windows Phone users

Google Maps never officially existed on Windows Phone, but yesterday many users were cut off from the web version of the maps. Users of smartphones with Microsoft's mobile operating system were redirected to the Google homepage when they visited the maps.google.com page. This is reported, for example, by Verge , Gizmodo and WMpoweruser .

The quiet confrontation between Google and Microsoft has recently ceased to be quiet - primarily due to the “corporation of good”. Recently, Google announced that it will not release any applications for Windows Phone, as the audience is not there, then refused to support Microsoft Exchange.

The official reason for closing Maps for Windows Phone users is that the service is optimized for WebKit, while Internet Explorer is running on another engine.

However, everything suggests that the cards worked perfectly on WP until the decision to close them.

Microsoft says that “Internet Explorer in Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 uses the same rendering engine”, while in Windows 8, the maps work fine, so you can hardly speak of WebKit as the real reason for closing the service.

Apparently, Google simply decided for one reason or another to start blocking Windows Phone users.

UPD1 : OlegD writes that Google has closed maps for most non-Android users. Just tried to go with Blackberry - redirect, with N9 - redirect, they write that with Symbian the same.

UPD2 : Google has promised to remove redirects: Google Maps browsers to ensure that it is the best possible experience for users.
