Intel is going to create in Russia WiMax-network of federal scale

The Kommersant publication reports that Intel is going to create a federal WiMax wireless network in Russia. According to preliminary estimates, the construction of such a WiMax network will cost Intel $ 1 billion, although due to the lack of frequencies, this amount may not be enough. It is already known that the company is negotiating with the main operators, whose names have not been announced, with a frequency resource.

Igor Taber, director of business development for Intel in the field of broadband access in Europe, said that the company plans to create a federal WiMax network in Russia in three years, and next year to deploy a wireless network in a number of large cities in the country. Taber said that with one of the operators the company is already close to an agreement.

Recall that the IEEE 802.16e standard (also known as Mobile WiMax) provides data transmission at speeds up to 75 Mbps at a distance of 100 m in densely populated cities and up to 3 km in sparsely populated areas. In Russia, WiMax networks appeared for the first time last year, however, due to the high cost of equipment and the previously indicated shortage of radio frequencies, they have not yet become widespread.
