Canonical has announced a mobile version of Ubuntu, which is based on the core and Android drivers, but does not use a Java virtual machine and promises to use "all the power of the phone," reports The Verge. The OS will support both ARM and x86, and, as promised, will be sufficiently compatible, so that Android phone manufacturers can run it on their devices with minimal adaptation.

Ubuntu for Android, announced last February, will be the first step for this new ecosystem to appear on devices that, according to Mark Shuttleworth, will definitely appear during this year. Although cooperation with any operators or manufacturers has not been announced, the first mobile device on Ubuntu for Android, as promised, will be released by the manufacturer of Android devices "high-end".

Phones on Ubuntu itself are promised by the beginning of 2014, but the company intends to show preliminary versions in London, and images of the development platform will be available for the Galaxy Nexus over the next few weeks. This is so far the only officially supported device at the moment.
