What can we expect from SP1 for Windows Vista

In the first service pack (SP1) for Microsoft Windows Vista, attention is focused on stability and security. SP1 will not appear earlier than next year, but judging by the beta version of the service pack, the update is designed to increase stability and security rather than a noticeable performance increase.

Improvements

Many of the changes in this update package - version 0.275 was tested - will not be obvious to regular users (but you are not geeks, right? :). So, this SP will not add any changes to the graphical interface.

Microsoft says the beta version of the service pack improves stability, performance, and reliability after resuming from hibernation and waiting; adds support for new devices; enhances security; adds support for new standards, like exFAT .

According to Microsoft, the usual download of the final assembly of the service pack will take half an hour, the installation will require 7 GB of free disk space (after installing the update, some of the space will be freed), and the installation file will “weigh” 50 MB and be distributed via Windows Update.

Now a little about the improvements seen after installing the beta version of the "major update". The HP Compaq 8710p Core 2 Duo dual-core laptop without SP1 installed was loaded in 1 minute and 51 seconds - after installation, the boot time was reduced by 20 seconds.

Microsoft announced an "increase in the speed of copying and extracting files from archives," which was verified. However, after installing the beta version of SP1, there was a slight increase in the time to copy files (more precisely, 562 JPG images with a total size of 1.9 GB from the SD card to the hard disk of the laptop).

In another test, the speed of adding files to a disk image was checked. To do this, use Nero 7 Ultra on the dual-core Acer Aspire 5630 Core 2 Duo. This time after installing SP1, the time to complete the operation really decreased by about 7%.
