Summing up 2012 on disk storage

image

As I promised in one of the articles - at the end of the year we will summarize the testing of all disk subsystems that we have recently spent in our hands (including those for which reviews have not been written) and put it in the form of colorful graphs. Actually, we keep our promise and present you a summary table of performance.

We have the following disk subsystems in the table:

Fusion io ioDrive Duo
OCZ Vertex 4, RAID 10 (4 drives)
OCZ Z-Drive R4
Dell PCI-E SSD
SAS 72GB 15k, RAID 10 (4 drives)
SAS 300GB 10k, RAID 10 (4 drives)
')
Information storage has always been, is and will be one of the priorities in the field of IT. Some data is more critical, some less, but in this age of computer technology it is no longer possible to imagine a single company that did not even have a simple file server. The storage market covers an extremely wide range of products and technologies - from home systems to solutions for data center infrastructure and cloud platforms. But not only simple or budget solutions are in demand, sometimes the value of data is extremely high, even for the sake of performance, but also ultra-fast solutions for large enterprises (for example, Databases) are also in high demand. All this pushes manufacturers of storage systems to grow every year more and more actively, so as not to fall behind in technical progress and not to be left out of the leading manufacturers. Choosing products and technologies, companies are primarily forced to pay attention to economic performance and scalability of systems. Technologies that make it possible to increase storage efficiency or data availability are highlighted. By this we can not say that one of the technologies (HDD or SSD) can completely replace each other. These technologies are developed in parallel, some are aimed at the speed and availability of data, others for a longer time or large volumes of stored information. But the symbiosis of these solutions is also often used when the SSD acts as a cache for the main HDD or RAID controller (Intel Smart Response Technology, CacheCade, Adaptec MaxIQ technology).

Now for the charts.

Next year we will have even more intensive development of various SSD solutions, although we don’t have to wait for something outstanding from the HDD, perhaps there is nothing at the moment, so ordinary HDDs could surprise us (well, maybe hybrid SAS drives will appear this will still need to look). Next year, we will please you with even more reviews and tests of various devices, new methods of testing equipment, and in general we will try to introduce more about server and near-server equipment.

Happy New Year and Merry Christmas
