That ended the next meeting of the Russian wing of the
Web Standards Group . This time it was held in the wonderful city of St. Petersburg. I think, on behalf of both WSG Russia and all those present, it would be right to express thanks to
Alexei Rybakov for organizing the event and
Yandex for sponsorship. Lesha, Yandex, thank you! =)
Members of
WSG Russia gathered in advance in the
Yandex office to get acquainted with their newly-joined colleagues and discuss current affairs of the community and plans for the near future. Then our friendly company went directly to the meeting.

The “glass hall” of the St. Petersburg Hotel was the best suited for holding such an event: spacious, bright, with comfortable soft armchairs, good acoustics and all necessary equipment.

The opening speech was clearly opened by
Vadim Makeev , who briefly explained what the
Web Standards Group is , what goals this organization pursues and how it is represented in the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet.

Then the speakers of the meeting were presented and the program part began. The first report on the topic “Kandy is a comfortable IDE for layout” was made by Alexey Nikolayenkov and his colleague, unfortunately, I did not remember the name of the latter. The speakers spoke about a very promising and interesting development environment for webtechnologists. If the project developers succeed in correctly implementing all their ideas, then in the future, incessant debates about what is more convenient to impose will disappear by themselves. Future product can be found
here .

The second report was presented by
Vadim Makeev . The report was presented to the assembled public rather in the form of impromptu and introduced the audience to such a relatively new phenomenon as CSS frameworks. The conclusion can be drawn as follows - the frameworks are all definitely good for learning and self-education, but unfortunately they are not very convenient for use in real projects.

Then
Alexei Rybakov presented the report “Features of Data Patterning Using XSL and Docbook”. I admit honestly that I had never even heard of the
DocBook standard. Perhaps this particular report was for me the most interesting.
Andrey Sumin closed the program part with the report “Modularity in Javascript”. Unfortunately, I still only superficially touch on my work technology Javascript, because for me many things have not been too clear. It should be noted that this report was essentially a short version of the master class of Andrey, which he conducted at the
ClientSide 2007 conference.

The official part of the event ended there, but the communication continued for some time on the sidelines. The open
WSG Russia meeting was attended by about 70 people, which in truth is even more than we expected.

All interested persons were also able to get a CD from the
RIT-2007 conference for free.

We also organized video from two cameras at the same time. I also
filmed nablerts , which will be engaged in mixing video. If the video will be compiled in a decent way, I think it will be distributed later.

As a positive outcome, we can highlight the following:
- web standards in runet (and the entire Russian-speaking segment of the network) to be;
- The public and developers are becoming increasingly interested in the topic of web standards;
- to WSG Russia shows the attention of large companies, in particular Opera Software;
- the ranks of WSG Russia are continuously replenished by competent specialists;
- there will be open meetings for WSG Russia not only in Russia, next year meetings are planned in Kiev and Minsk.
A little later, I will post a link to the photo gallery, when it will be uploaded to the flicker and my informal trip report on my personal
blog .
