Mobile Market Trends: Distimo Year Results

The company Distimo recently announced an analytical review of the mobile market in 2012. According to the report, analysts see as the main trends of the year:

1. Impressive daily profit growth with Google Play

Over the past 4 months, the total growth of Google Play’s daily income from the world's 20 largest markets was 43%. While the growth of daily income from the App Store is half as much, the figure has increased by only 21%.

However, if we look at the whole year, not the last 4 months, then Apple’s revenues since January 2012 have grown by a total of 51%: individually, earnings from the iPad were 71% and 40% from the iPhone. And the largest revenue growth from the iPad was shown by Russia, which is 143%. In terms of profit from the iPhone, growth in Russia is also significant - 96%, here these figures only bypassed the mobile markets of Japan (138%) and China (118%). And the trend of high income from iPad devices, surpassing profits from iPhones, is observed in many countries, not only in Russia.

As for Google Play, over the past 4 months, the total increase in profits from the Russian market was 37%. Thus, our country is also among the top five world leaders in increasing daily revenues from Google Play.

2. App Store brings the greatest profit

Despite impressive revenue growth from Google Play, in monetary terms, the profit from the App Store is still much more significant. For example, in November, daily revenues from the App Store in the 20 largest countries amounted to about $ 15 million, with Google Play - only $ 3.5 million.

3. One-tenth of all revenue from Google Play earn 4 applications

In particular, in November, 10% of revenue from the App Store in the version for the iPhone was divided between seven applications, in the version for the iPad - between six. But with Google Play, only four applications share 10% of the profits.

4. US leads in revenue

According to the total revenue of the App Store and Google Play, the United States is still the leader. Next comes Japan, the UK and Australia.

5. 1.75 million users in 3 days - no limit

One of the most popular applications of 2012, Draw Something, has won 1 million users over 9 days. As they say in Distimo, this is far from a record. For example, Line Pop, one of the five applications of Asian Naver, collected 1.75 million downloads within 72 hours.

6. The iPad in Russia accounts for the highest proportion of iOS downloads in the world.

Of all downloads from the App Store in Russia, iPad accounts for 46%, followed by the Netherlands (38% of downloads) and Finland (35%). Least of all downloads on the iPad is observed in Japan - only 7%.

7. Mobile app market is games

The position of the most popular genre in the App Store and Google Play is traditionally occupied by games, they account for most of the profits.

Moreover, 9 out of 10 most successful publishers of applications for different platforms are engaged in exactly games.

8. Two-thirds of revenue comes from in-app purchases (IAP)

In the App Store, revenue from IAP increased in 2012 from 53% to 69%. But this does not prevent developers to continue to profit from paid applications. For example, 35 top-income companies earned 35% of their income from paid apps. So the number of paid downloads of the mobile version of Minecraft: Pocket Edition has reached 5 million. EA and Gameloft are also successfully developing in this market.

9. Tablet users are willing to pay more.

First of all, it concerns applications from such categories as “navigators”, “business” and “performance”. The average price of an app on an iPad is now $ 3.42 (a slight drop of 8%), on the iPhone - $ 1.86 (an increase of 16%).
