Which CMS made the largest online stores in Russia?
Recently, we conducted a study: “On which CMS were the top 100 sites of the RuNet by attendance made?”: Part 1 and part 2 In this study, there was also a small analytics of the results obtained. Today we want to continue the study with another one, this time we decided to analyze on which boxed CMS the largest Internet shops of the Russian Internet are made.
We divided this stage of the study into two parts: online stores in Russia and online stores in Ukraine. This part is devoted to Russia, Ukraine will be next.
Like last time, the analysis included all the most popular CMS runet and some popular Western CMS.

We decided not to reinvent the wheel and found the current rating of the top 100 online stores in Russia in terms of money turnover, which was published in the spring of 2012 in the Kommersant Secret Firm magazine No. 5 (319) of 05/01/2012 . Shops from the rating and became the material for research. True, in the rating we did not find several stores that “were lost” for unknown reasons, we added them at the very end, I think they will only add to the picture (by the way, I’m sure the readers will remember other “lost” stores in comments, which will be very useful in such an opaque market). So, the table below:
The picture was very unexpected! First, the vast majority of stores use self-written CMS, mostly in PHP, although there is also in Java, and one even in Python, and secondly, 1C-Bitrix is in the lead from boxed CMS, which also came as a surprise to us, thirdly , there is not a single store on Magento, although it is this CMS that is recognized as the leading e-commerce market in the world, and in RuNet, it turns out, it is almost never used.
By the way, one of the readers of the past research made an important note that we missed: many sites do not use boxed CMS for historical reasons, because they were made quite a long time ago and started without a box. Changing technology in a live project is always very problematic.
Do not forget that the lack of a boxed CMS does not mean a complete lack of a CMS, in many stores there are self-written solutions, studio designs, etc. This is also a CMS, but not for the mass market.
Instead of conclusion
An online store is a type of project that has relatively similar functionality from site to site and therefore the use of CMS in this type of project is fully justified. An exception may be huge projects with a bunch of specific requirements, it’s easier to write everything from scratch. In general, there are several quality CMS that are most suitable for the store, among them: Magento, 1C-Bitrix, osCommerce, PHPShop, OpenCart, HostCMS, etc. For serious projects, I would still advise Magento, for very simple and budget ones - OpenCart. Everyone has both strengths and weaknesses, and most importantly - the solution is always selected by the task, and not vice versa. But the goal of this article is not to incline to any of the solutions, but to show the picture on the RuNet, the decision this time I leave to the readers;)
