Admins of the Great Chinese firewall seriously took up the VPN

VPN is one of the most popular ways to bypass the Golden Shield (this is the official name of the Great Chinese Firewall). In addition to political activists, dissidents and people who simply want to use Facebook, Twitter or Wikipedia normally, VPN is widely used in business to create a secure corporate network.

It looks like in December, the Chinese authorities began large-scale blocking of VPN connections. Providers Astrill , WiTopia and StrongVPN , providing VPN services, report a significant slowdown or complete blocking of communication. According to them, the lock is implemented by one of the country's largest providers - China Unicom.

According to StrongVPN , UDP connections are more susceptible to blocking. In some cases, the connection is possible if you change the port, protocol and some other settings. It is unlikely that the Chinese authorities will decide to completely block all VPN traffic, even if they can technically implement it, as it will hit many international corporations doing business in China and using VPN to exchange confidential information between departments. There will always be workarounds, but the life of a simple user can become more difficult.

The official Chinese press denies that the firewall was “upgraded”, but reminds that companies complaining about blocking a VPN worked illegally. According to Chinese law, only companies registered in China can use VPNs, and only with the permission of the Ministry of Industry and Information of China.

Ironically, on December 14, at the height of the story with increased Internet censorship, China Central Television released the previously banned film “V means Vendetta”, causing a sharp cognitive dissonance in the Chinese network community, accustomed to consider Guy Fawkes mask to be a struggle with censorship and authoritarian regime.
