Domain Kremlin.ru

Once an error was discovered in the printed matter: a typo in the domain name. There was no time to redo anything, since the products had already been distributed.

Usually, in this case, the domain name is simply registered with a typo and the redirection is configured, but it was not there. Due to an error, the first half of the domain name was Latin, the second - Cyrillic. It looked like this: "hello-mir.ru".

The rules for registering domain names in .RU and . domains are as follows:
3.1.1. A domain name in a .RU domain must consist of its own designation, unique within the top-level domain, and the characters ".ru".
Own designation must meet the following technical requirements:
1) contain at least two characters;
2) contain no more than 63 characters;
3) begin and end with a letter or number;
4) do not contain characters other than letters, numbers and hyphens (valid letters are letters of the Latin alphabet; uppercase and lowercase letters do not differ);
5) not contain simultaneously hyphens in the 3rd and 4th positions.

A conflict was brewing in my head. Firstly, Cyrillic domains in the .RU zone cannot be registered, and secondly, Cyrillic domains in the .RU zone exist (Kremlin.ru, President.ru). How, then, did these domains appear if they could not be registered?

whois quickly suggested to me who is the registrar of these domain names.

In a polite manner, I wrote a letter in which I inquired on what grounds the Kremlin.ru domain was registered. A quick response was received in which I listed all the above rules, thereby actually confirming that the domain is incorrect. The direct answer to my question looked something like this: “We don’t know on what basis this domain is registered. For information, contact the focal point. ”

It turns out that in the .RU zone you can still register Cyrillic domains, provided that you are a Kremlin or president.

UPD: December 25, 2012 the domains of the Kremlin.ru and the president.ru ceased to exist.
