Digital Premiere: Minecraft, Story of Mojang

The project “Minecraft, Story of Mojang” is finally over. Today, project backers have been given access to a digital download of the film and sound track. But this is not the most interesting moment of the story.

Wanting to give kickstarter backers earlier access to the film, they decided to present it as a digital premiere using XBox Live. All XBox Live users with Gold access will be able to watch the movie for free, tomorrow today, December 22nd. After that, the film can be bought on DVD via FanGamer or watched online via Redux.

This is the first experience of the premiere through the service XBox Live. The film producers decided not to distribute by standard methods, and also did not present the film to any festivals. Typically, film-festivals require a period of exclusivity, and until it expires - the film cannot be released for rent and sale. I ran into this when the Indie Game: The Movie film was shown in various cinemas during the festival for a long time, and kickstarter backers, including me, sucked their paws. It was a little insulting.
