HD video will appear on YouTube

YouTube co-founder Steve Chen at the NewTeeVee conference confirmed rumors that YouTube is experiencing high-resolution videos. However, he noted that the video on YouTube should be accessible to everyone (that is, to be with a low bitrate), and HD content does not meet this condition.

Chen listed the difficulties of delivering HD video, including the time spent on data buffering, because of which users may not have to wait for the video to download and just leave the site. But at the same time, he told Cnet that HD content would appear on YouTube in three months. Now the YouTube team is testing a system that determines the width of a user's channel and, depending on it, gives the network viewer the choice of video quality.

Chen also said that YouTube stores original videos uploaded by users, but most of them are of poor quality and have a resolution of 320x240 pixels, so converting them to an HD image doesn’t improve.
