Support for Windows Phone 7.x will end in 2014

Good news for anyone who owns Windows Phone 7.x phones. Many thought that Microsoft would abandon Windows Phone users with old phones, but this turned out to be completely different.

Microsoft said that after the release of update 7.8, which is scheduled for early 2013, support for this version of the OS will continue for another 18 months. In addition to bug fixes, it is possible that during this time there will be another (or maybe not one) “big” update. So it's too early to send your old phones to retire.

If you like your current phone, or you are looking for an inexpensive phone on Windows Phone, you can easily purchase budget phones with Windows Phone 7.x.
')
It's a good news. And if you count the time from the release date of the first version of Windows Phone 7 to the end of 2014, you get 4 years of support, which is an unprecedented number for the mobile platform. Even the iPhone gets updates for three years (though, there users get exactly the new OS versions, not the old ones), but if we consider that Windows Phone 7.8 supports almost all the new features of the G8, then these two numbers can be to correlate. What to say about the owners of Android devices, which, in general, do not receive any sensible updates at all.

This behavior of Microsoft can be partially understood, because the core of Windows Phone 7.x is Windows CE, and in the eighth version it is NT. But, on the other hand, at least some phones could be updated from 7.x to 8.x. For example, Lumia 710/800/900, because there is 512 MB of RAM (as on HTC Windows Phone 8S and Nokia Lumia 620), and even single-core processors can’t be called weak.

Well, we have what we have. Windows Phone is an excellent alternative to Android, if you need a bug-free and safe device for surfing, email and navigation, if you don't need a huge number of games (which, for now, not so much) or if you just want something new. Let's hope that the guys from Redmond will delight us more than once, and Windows Phone will take its place in the mobile OS market.

UPD: Especially for those who do not know how (or who are too lazy) to google the innovations of WP 7.8 / 8 and scream eagerly it is not clear that ...

List of WP8 innovations. What is available and for 7.8 is bold , the list of innovations that are not needed in WP7.8 (for example, due to the lack of the necessary iron on older models) is highlighted in italics :

XBOX Music Store
Bing audio
Voice mail
Multi-core processor support
Support for new permissions
MicroSD memory card support
Internet Explorer 10 browser with HTML5 out of the box
Transmitted data counter
Simplified development of games with Direct X immediately under Windows Phone and Windows 8
NFC support
Payments within applications
Mobile wallet
Voice control
OneNote, Office 365 support
Normal installation of ringtones
Phone data encryption
Task Manager
Deep integration with Skype
Modified home screen with scalable tiles
Bluetooth file transfer
Password protection
Connecting the phone in flash drive mode
Notifications on the lock screen

So most of the innovations are available for WP7.8, and of those that are not available, most are not needed due to the lack of hardware (not on WP7.8 phones with multi-core processors or a resolution of not 800x480).

PS If it seems to you that some kind of mega-feature from Android is so important for you that you cannot live without it, then you shouldn’t shit in the comments. Everyone without you knows that Android is the most open system in the world. And the news is not about that.
