Linux is growing! New Mint 14 for OEM; lightweight DSL, Core and Puppy, and more and more Linux jobs in the new State of Linux infographic

For the European conference LinuxCon Europe , held in Barcelona, Pingdom created an interesting infographic “How are Linux” (infographics inside the post).

With the naked eye it is clear that Linux is again attracting more and more attention , both in the industry press and among regular users. Curious topics like this regularly occur: Dec 4: “Been a Windows head. Looking for change " , or like this: " First time Linux experience - extremely disappointed " , and even: Linux-positive .
')
Nevertheless, it is difficult to find a laptop or desktop on Linux for sale. “Without OS” configurations are found - so why not install Linux Mint there (for example, since this is the most popular distribution kit, according to DistroWatch ), even if it is “as is”, without any support?

Maybe there will be more such systems, since December 10, 64-bit images for PC manufacturers and distributors appeared : Linux Mint 14 MATE OEM and Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon OEM 64-bit - which offer the buyer to initially initialize the new PC (as in Windows).

Ideal Linux for an Internet terminal?

Not so few windows users, like me, do not mind turning existing old PCs into Linux-based terminals, or at least try various distributions in a virtual machine.

For such interesting lightweight distributions such as DSL were created, but they have not been updated for a long time. Now they breathed a second wind:

I tried all 3, but I'm not sure that they are well suited for this purpose, or they need to be adjusted. In the virtual at Puppy and Core, the mouse slows down, in DSL it doesn't work at all; When installing FireFox, Russian-language sites are displayed as cracks, even if you select encoding - russian.

Maybe there is a package (one) that installs Firefox or an alternative, and sets up the system so that it can be used as an Internet terminal in Russia?

To the subject: the useful article " Lightweight Linux Distribution: " is from the Linuxed blog - Exploring Linux distros, a non-techie's blog. The author has a lot of reviews and recommendations on distributions, with the video - who just chooses - look.

So far, having tried many different distributions, including ubuntu 12.10 and mint 14, I got the impression that the ideal, universal option for everything is Linux Mint 14.1 Cinnamon . From which you can boot, and everything (including flash and codecs) will work, even in LiveCD mode.

If someone, after reading this post, is inspired to finally touch Linux - my advice to you, start with Linux Lite, and then Linux Mint.

In November, there was even a “ Linux Lite 1.0.2 ” distribution kit ( review ), which is positioned as an ideal option for trying Linux for the first time - I agree with this. It works very fast, visually pleasing, it flies in a virtual machine. (From the non-obvious: when booting from livecd, it requires the root user with an empty password).

And, actually, the promised infographics from Pingdom.

Retelling it does not make sense, but the most interesting point, in my opinion, is that 85% of companies believe that finding the right Linux specialist is not easy , while 63% increase the number of vacancies related to Linux .

According to some, XP is the best system of all times and peoples.
What do you think: what is better today for an Internet terminal script - XP or Linux Mint?
