Guido van Rossum transferred from Google to Dropbox

The author of the Python programming language Guido van Rossum on Friday worked last day at Google , and from January he will be enlisted in the Dropbox staff. Dropbox executives are happy to welcome Guido. They call him an old friend who helped create Dropbox “from the first lines of code” ( dropbox.py ).

“From the very beginning, it was clear that Dropbox should support all major operating systems. Historically, such support required serious efforts from developers: since for each platform we need different development tools and programming languages, we had to rewrite the same code several times, ”Drew Houston, founder of Dropbox, writes in the official blog. - We did not have time for this. Fortunately, the Python programming language has become our salvation. ”

“A few years before [before Dropbox was founded],” Drew Houston continues, “Python has become my favorite programming language, thanks to its combination of simplicity, flexibility, and elegance . These qualities of Python, as well as the efforts of the community to support each platform, allowed us to write code once, which then worked everywhere. They also influenced Dropbox's broader design philosophy as a simple product that makes your life easier.

Five years have passed since the first version of our prototype was saved to disk as dropbox.py, since then Guido himself and the Python community have greatly helped us solve some interesting problems in creating a web application for 100 million users.

So we welcome Guido at Dropbox with admiration and appreciation. ”
