USA can still give control over ICANN

There is continued speculation in the Western press about whether the US administration will extend the next two-year contract with ICANN, which expires on September 30, 2006.

If the contract is extended, the United States will retain control of the DNS system and, therefore, over the entire Internet. Otherwise, ICANN will become an independent entity that will act at its discretion without American oversight.

A week ago, public hearings were organized to discuss this issue. Judging by the tone and themes of most speeches, it was possible to conclude that the US still intends to extend the contract , despite all its long-standing plans for the privatization of ICANN.

However, now experts say that not everything is so bad. The very fact of organizing public hearings is an “incredibly positive sign” and testifies to significant changes in the thinking of American officials over the past year. They now openly declare their desire to privatize ICANN. The only problem is that no one knows when this will happen.
