Good day to all.
I have heard from many that virtualization is evil and that it will not solve any problems, there is a fundamentally opposite opinion. Many say that you need to virtualize a small amount of non-critical applications and vice versa. I want to tell my story:
A year ago, the share of virtualization in the company was only 3%, namely with a fleet of 30 servers, one of them deployed 3 virtual machines. Now there are only 3 physical servers. How was it ...

Takam "beginning" I certainly can not surprise anyone. And indeed, such a server for every second. But the main understanding is that it is necessary to change and change what is around. One of my friends (a system architect with a capital letter) liked to speak when they first met - and now let's see your server. Probably the expression “say who you are friends with and I will tell you who you are” or similarly vividly describe an expression that can be projected onto the IT sphere.
At some point, there was simply no room left for “my server room” to install servers for the new needs of the company. The failure of the equipment began to repeat with periodic constancy; I generally keep quiet about the air conditioning and fire suppression system.
The park was heterogeneous, the old - new in the wry, no systematization.
It was decided to upgrade (this word is very fond of
D.AM ), namely, the construction of a new server room with the acquisition of new equipment that meets modern requirements for performance and reliability and the transfer of the existing system to the virtualization “rails”.
As it stands now:

At the same time, there are only 3 physical servers left (one domain controller, the backup server in which the tape library via SAS is connected, the virtual environment management server (although I really want to virtualize it for fault tolerance).
On a curious
site from the company Veeam Software, which publishes the results of a study on virtualization, there is an interesting V-Index. This index is 38.9 (the ratio of virtual servers in relation to physical). I decided to use these indices “before and after” the deep modernization of the server room. We get 3% against almost 99% with an average value for the industry of 39% (they will say a lot - why, maybe not or something else). I personally answered this question, this is a great indicator. Why tell you?
There are many answers to this question, from elementary consolidation to increasing reliability and reducing the cost of expenses, etc.
And what am I doing, I want to ask, and what index do you have ???
