In the next year, BitTorrent, releasing μTorrent, plans to take a number of steps, the purpose of which is to monetize their developments through the legal distribution of media content through P2P networks, thereby obtaining a double benefit - on the one hand, it will not be possible to say that The client is used exclusively by pirates, and on the other hand, it’s just to get financial returns from your project.
BitTorrent Marketing Director Mett Mason (Matt Mason) said that his company’s audience currently stands at about 160 million people, which is larger than Netflix and Hulu’s audience together; Moreover, the daily active user base is 40 million. This circumstance allows companies that are engaged in the production of media content to offer a very wide market of potential consumers, while, due to the well-known features of P2P networks, the infrastructure for distributing this content will, in fact, lie on the shoulders of the users themselves.
Also, the company will not leave its focus on the mobile market: μTorrent versions for Android and iOS will evolve, which definitely further increases the potential base of video and music consumers in order. We are also negotiating with manufacturers of equipment for embedding μTorrent in televisions and set-top boxes, which allows us to speak about another increase in the BitTorrent audience.
Quite naturally, Mason received both a question and piracy. His answer can be formulated approximately as follows: the presence of legal content on the network will automatically cause a decrease in the volume of piracy, which “will be a great victory for the company”, but how technically to solve the problem of preventing any licensed video from pirated distribution is not yet clear.
