The UN is developing a new world order for the Internet
The Russian authorities, who have recently distinguished themselves with a whole range of legislative innovations in the field of Internet regulation, are not alone in their desire to control the global network. On how to intervene in the web intends to United Nations, tells in detail the journalist The Verge Adi Robertson.
The future of the Internet will in fact be decided in the offices of UN bureaucrats - Google and other influential opponents of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) are sure of this. This UN structure has developed a 25-year network reform plan. Judging by unofficial information, the trend of the ITU has chosen an unequivocal one - increased regulation. The parties argue what is involved in this case - about censorship or about legality. The discussion will resume with a new force on December 3, when ITU members will meet in Dubai to discuss their initiatives. However, experts predict in advance that they will not be able to come to any final decisions at the event - the discussion on the rights and freedoms of Internet users is more of a philosophical nature and is poorly conceivable in the form of written agreements.
ITU is a UN agency that brings together representatives from 193 countries, approximately 700 companies and research institutes specializing in communications. The organization has been dealing with network regulation since the 1990s. Initially, ITU was supposed to be the curator of the global domain system, but ultimately this function was assigned to ICANN. Nevertheless, ambitions in the UN have been preserved. ITU Secretary Hamadoun Toure insisted that the agency only wanted to deal with issues of cyber security, spam and protecting children from illegal content. According to his version, officials do not dream of any kind of network management. Like it or not, you can be sure of the results of the conference in Dubai. ')
