The development of Israeli scientists will allow the blind to "see" like bats

Recently, various “smart glasses” plans from different manufacturers are often discussed, which will help their users spend their time in everyday life more efficiently or solve some complex tasks (if it concerns industry or the army). Israeli scientists have developed "glasses" that will help blind people to better navigate in space and make their lives easier.
Scientists from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem have developed a prototype system that can help people who are blind from birth by converting video into auditory signals. Sonar Vision works in a similar way in the system of echolocation of bats, only here, instead of chirping, a video camera built into the glasses is used. A laptop or smartphone converts the image into sound, which in turn is transmitted to the headset. After about 70 hours of training, the device allows users to identify objects such as faces or houses, the position of objects in space, and even identify individual letters. Surprisingly, scientists also found that after several hours of using the device, areas of the cerebral cortex that were responsible for vision became active for the first time in congenital blind. This development could help doctors “wake up” areas of the brain that had never been used before, even after years of blindness.
