About 40% of BitTorrent traffic now encrypted?

Experts note a sharp increase in the share of encrypted traffic in torrents. According to statistics from one of the British ISPs , the share of encrypted traffic has increased tenfold over the year and is already 40%. The provider reports that a year ago the traffic of open and encrypted torrents in its networks was 500 Mbit / s and 20 Mbit / s, and now - 350 Mbit / s and 200 Mbit / s, respectively.

Not very competent commentators attribute the growth of encrypted traffic to attempts by pirates to hide counterfeit. Like, here's another evidence of the spread of piracy. This completely stupid assumption has even spread to the media, which indicates either a weak literacy of journalists, or someone's interest in the fact that the information was given precisely in this sauce.

In fact, BitTorrent protocol encryption does not allow to hide the contents of torrents. It was created entirely for other purposes, namely, to hide the characteristic BitTorrent-headers in packages and to hide the fact that traffic is transmitted over torrents. Hide from telecom operators, who began to illegally block and “trim” traffic from torrent networks about two years ago. The recent scandal with the shaping in the network operator Comcast - a vivid example.

In fact, independent experts doubt that the encrypted traffic is up to 40% of all streams in torrents. Measurements show that such traffic is actually a little less than 10%. Record corporations and the RIAA may be beneficial to inflate the hype around oversized numbers.
