Acer Aspire V5 Touch Ultra Notebook Review

2012 will definitely be if not the last year in the life of mankind, then a turning point in the notebook market. Fracture happens due to the transition to the touch. That is, the transition was sort of a long time ago, but we got used to it just now. Smartphones, tablets - it all taught us to poke fingers in what we see. And to facilitate the transition to finger poking will be the operating system Windows 8.
Yes, of course, for all 2012 laptops, Windows 8 is available. Also, everywhere, where Windows 7 stood - you can upgrade to Windows 8. But the real pleasure from the new Microsoft OS can only be obtained with a touchscreen. The first sign with a new interface communication format in my hands was the Acer Aspire V5 Touch laptop.

The Aspire V5 is a full-fledged 15 inch notebook with a drive. In other words - a machine for work on the spot.

A daily sock is not something that will pull you off your shoulder (the weight of the laptop is 2.3 kg), but it will not bring much pleasure either. But if you leave such a device, say, at home, to replace a PC, or at work - instead of a bulky box and an ancient monitor ... In general - you decide.

Yes, one more clear advantage of this notebook will be its thickness - 23 mm. This is closer to ultrabooks. At the same time, they left the drive and all the necessary ports in the laptop!

The package on the Aspire V5 is very simple: the laptop itself, the charger, the battery and the adapter for connecting the D-Sub network cable.

The opening angle of the lid is 165 degrees. This is really very good. In working with a touchscreen, it helps to optimally choose the inclination of the cover.

Display - TN matrix, HD resolution (1366 * 768).
Viewing angles - average, in the work did not notice anywhere falling colors or dimming.

Since we touched the display (yes, you can touch it!) - a multitouch capacitive sensor for 10 simultaneous key presses.

The frame around the display is very small - it is more convenient to work with touch capabilities and not at the expense of design.

It is the design of the laptop - prone to business style. Moderately strict, moderately stylish. This laptop is suitable for an ordinary student, a girl, and a business-oriented person. The lid and work surfaces are made of gray plastic (although outwardly it is very similar to aluminum and I was hoping for metal to the last).

The laptop uses heat distribution technology in such a way that the working surfaces (where the hands are lying, as well as the claiviature) do not heat up.
Blowing hot air through the cooler is done through the ventilation grill on the left side.

Most of the ports (namely, all) are located on the left side of the V5. The decision is controversial - after all, there are three USB (two standard 2.0, one 3.0), HDMI-port, universal port (D-Sub, LAN).

All three USB ports on one side - it looks weird. One pleases - on the left side. Right-handed exhale.

On the front side of the card reader, work indicators and everything.

On the right is a DVD drive. In general, on the one hand, a thing is useless as early as 2012 (even Windows 8 can be installed from a flash drive out of the box !!), but the mere presence of design, thickness and other characteristics is a big plus for Acer.

Webcam - 720p, noisy. The location of the camera itself is standard. It fits perfectly into the design - under the glass of the display.

Frame from the camera.

Sound subsystem - two speakers with Dolby setting. The sound gives a good, loud, no wheezing, no noise.

Very tricky and unusual solution with bulky connectors - there is no D-Sub and LAN port on the case. They are available by connecting a special adapter. It turns out such a thing:

Separate battle deserves a battery.

Included with the laptop is a 2500 mAh battery. This is less than in my smartphone!
Guys, is it really so difficult to make a bigger battery? Yes, I am ready to donate 200 grams of weight for 4 hours of work.
Immediately from 1.5 (under full load) to 2.5 hours (without load) work.

On the other hand, this laptop, as I have already noticed, is rather a desktop version. And then this disadvantage is not so weighty. But the sediment remained.

The Aspire touchpad is traditionally a good multi-touch, beautiful and big. Like the MacBooks (who have long been leaders in this category).

Keyboard - oh finally! - not just insular and beautiful, but also illuminated. Brightness adjustment - one. Either on or off. But this is enough. The backlight is white, does not hurt the eyes in total darkness. Convenient and practical. For some reason, a space without illumination, but I do not think that someone does not know where the keyboard has a space.

Inside the device is Core i3 3217U (middle, lower-middle segment) - a very low power consumption of 17W.

According to the windows 8, the system is somewhere 4.6, and first of all because of the video card (I thought the processor or the hard disk would be a weak point).

RAM 4 GB.
500 GB hard drive.

Synthetic tests give out not very bright numbers. Gamers will be disappointed despite having normal discrete graphics.

However, all other users will be pleasantly surprised by the smooth operation of the system and applications.
Even video editing on a laptop does not cause any particular difficulties and is not much a stoker for a typewriter. Naturally, I'm not about professional use.

On the operating system from Microsoft, Acer did not put anything extra.

Proprietary utilities Acer Explorer, Acer Cloud, as well as several toys and entertainment programs.

If you really want to - you can use the system only through the touch-screen. The virtual keyboard even recognizes handwritten Russian input. The operating system is oriented to work with touches. Well, the equipment will only help in the work.

Summary

After a week of using the Aspire V5, I went to the store to look at the competitors ...
99% of the shelves were “underdone laptops” - so now I call laptops without a touchscreen display.
And after you try the touch-screen in a laptop - I do not want to use these antiques.

This laptop is only the first swallow in the touch-generation of laptops. And I already like this generation!
Design, functionality, as well as the presence of all the necessary ports - the Acer V5 is almost out of competition.
The price for this laptop is quite loyal - about 27 thousand rubles (at the time of writing).
