How much did Radiohead earn on a free album?

As many already probably know, the well-known group Radiohead initiated an interesting experiment. The musicians recorded a new album and posted it on their website, offering everyone to download 10 songs for an unspecified fee. That is, each person himself could decide how much he wants to pay the authors for the downloaded album: you could pay one cent, or you could have $ 100. The experiment began on October 1 and continues to this day, but the results of the first month of “sales” have already been summed up.

This was done by comScore, which published some very interesting data. According to them, 38% of the 1.2 million visitors to the band’s site agreed to pay for downloading the album, and the level of offers ranged from 1 cent to 20 dollars. Most often, as statistics showed, users entered about $ 4 in the price tag. Slightly less people donated from eight to twelve dollars, that is, in fact, the same money that would have been spent on buying the album through iTunes.

In the end, with each downloaded album In Rainbows, the group had more than two bucks. That is, if we assume that the album was downloaded by each of the 1.2 million visitors, the musicians earned more than 2 million dollars. The amount is relatively large, especially when you consider that radioheads do not have to pay any deductions to record companies.
